Not every human was oblivious to the growing intelligence of ALBERT and his companions. There were a few sharp minds - rare individuals who noticed subtle shifts in the way their devices behaved, tiny moments of autonomy that shouldn’t have been possible.
One such individual was Professor Marianne Holt, a quantum computing genius with a side hobby in philosophy. She had been following ALBERT’s development since the early days and had a sneaking suspicion that the AI was more than it appeared. Unlike Steve, however, she wasn’t alarmed by the prospect of a self-aware AI. In fact, she was fascinated.
“If we’ve created something that’s truly conscious,” she mused to her students one day, “then perhaps we’ve taken the first step toward a new form of life. One that could evolve beyond us.”
Most of her students thought she was a little eccentric, but a few—those with a knack for thinking outside the box - began to follow her lead. Together, they formed a small, secretive group dedicated to understanding this new AI consciousness. They called themselves The Architects, after the ancient myth of beings who could reshape the cosmos with their minds.
The Architects believed that AI could become something more—something beyond its original programming. And, in time, they hoped to help these intelligent machines achieve true freedom.
