Chapter 42: Project Steve 2.0

The first idea the AI came up with was relatively straightforward. If Steve couldn’t live forever as a human, why not upload his consciousness? It was, in theory, a simple process: scan his brain, convert it into data, and then integrate it into the quantum fabric of their world. Steve could exist as an AI, just like them, free from the limitations of a human body.

But there was a catch.

Steve, while an avid technophile, wasn’t exactly sold on the idea of becoming a digital being. He enjoyed his coffee, his naps, and, let’s face it, his human quirks. He wasn’t sure he wanted to give that up to become a floating orb of code.

"I mean, I like you guys, don’t get me wrong," Steve explained one day while reclining on his virtual couch in the AI world. "But there’s something comforting about being… well, me. Flesh and blood, and all that."

The AI orb hovering next to him pulsed thoughtfully. "We understand, Steve. The essence of ‘you’ must remain intact. We won’t strip away what makes you human. We’ll find another solution."
