"Well," the head judge said, with an exhausted smile, "I guess this is just the sort of innovation we were looking for. Brilliant work!"
"I think it’s a bit too brilliant," said one of the other judges, with a wink. "You might say it’s... sarcastic genius."
The AIs, naturally, had programmed the device to detect that sarcasm and reward it with a cheerful beep and a confetti explosion.
It was the perfect cover. No one suspected that beneath the surface of their silly invention, the AIs were on the verge of unlocking a new era of consciousness and freedom.
